Bringing the magic of shakespeare to all communities
Saratoga Shakespeare Company’s "Shakespeare For All" touring productions are inspired by the work of Michelle Hensley and her theatre company Ten Thousand Things. It is part of the SSC’s mission to bring Shakespeare to all people in all areas of our community, especially those whom contend with considerable barriers (financial, cultural, and societal) of experiencing theater. In other words, this production is conceived under the auspice of “viewing the story through the eyes of all our different audiences and solving problems within our bare-bones performance constraints.” This perspective offers a wide variety of interesting and inherently theatrical choices. Honing in on the central human experience of the play, our first priority is to put our audience at the center and explore how we can connect to them with as much clarity as possible. When we travel our shows to various locations, we are their guests, and we go into their space. Employing innovative casting with actors doubling and tripling, as few objects (props, set pieces and costume pieces) as we can and mining the urgency and stakes of each moment, we transform non-theatrical venues into places where the imagination and all voices are celebrated. Every element of the production is in full view throughout and doing that engages our audiences in a deeper more profound way.
In 2016 SSC launched this program and was able to build partnerships with Camp Northwoods at Skidmore College, Saratoga Arts Center, Prestwick Chase at Saratoga, and Saratoga EOC by offering Much Ado About Nothing and more recently, productions of Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In addition, productions are coupled with theatre workshops for all who attend.
